Groove-billed Ani
This Groove-billed Ani was reported on the La Chua trail at Paynes Prairie so I decided to see if I could locate it. I watched this bird for about 45 minutes as it perched in a variety of locations and this perch was the most open for photographs.
The Ballerina
Black-tailed Prairie Dogs are social mammals that live together in underground burrows. Because of their social nature they give constant contact calls and barks to the other prairie dogs in the colony, especially in the evening. When they give these contact calls they often stand up on their hind legs and throw their head back when giving their call.

I watched this prairie dog for several minutes while it barked to the other members in the colony. This was one of the more comical poses with it standing on one foot.

Peregrine Falcon
The Peregrine Falcon is the fastest animal in the world and has been clock at speeds nearing 200 miles per hour. They commonly hunt other birds on the wing by catching them in the air.

I found this Peregrine hunting shorebirds while walking along the beach at Lover's Key State Park. It was very windy and it was obvious he did not want to expend energy in flight, so he allowed me to get closer than I would have otherwise.

Chowing Down
The Osprey is the only raptor eating a diet consisting exclusively of fish. They dive in the water feet first and generally catch fish within the first 3 feet of water. This makes them dependent on surface dwelling fish or those fish in shallow waters.

I came across this Osprey at Lover's Key State Park while walking along the beach in the late evening. It had recently caught a fish had just started eating its meal when I came upon it. It was very tolerant of my presence and allowed a close approach.
