Wilson's Plover
Wilson's PIovers are a larger shorebird and have a thicker bill than some of the smaller plovers and sandpipers. The larger bill allows them to handle larger prey than other smaller shorebirds. This phenomenon is called niche segregation where each species has a specialized food or habitat and the specialization prevents it from competing with other similar species.
This Wilson's Plover was foraging in some nice clean sand which made for a nice background and foreground. I got low to the ground so that I would be at eye-level with the bird and gradually he came within a comfortable range of the camera. I'm continually amazed how tame wildlife is in Florida, and in some cases they seem to ignore your presence entirely.
