I watched this Burrowing Owl perch outside of its burrow for some time before it started throwing its head back and yawning. I though an image of the yawn would be quite comical when the action was frozen in time.

Florida Burrowing Owls occur in the central and southern part of the Florida. They are particularly common in the Cape Coral/Fort Myers areas where they have adapted to people and co-exist with them. Because they life in close proximity to human, they are very tame and allow a close approach. They are also social and are fun to watch as they kick sand out of their burrow, interact with other owls, or catch in an insect on the wing.

This particular owl pair allowed a very close approach and I tried as best as possible to get down close to the ground on the same level to achieve a pleasing composition. I took several pictures of them as they performed their courtship behavior where they preen each other.

I enjoy capturing subjects against pure color backgrounds like in this image because it separates the subject from the background very well.

Normally this species inhabits the boreal forests of Canada and northern United States where it feeds primarily on voles. Vole populations are cyclic and crash every so often, which forces these owls to travel south to find food.

I had heard about how tame these owls were given they inhabit remote areas and do not have much contact with people. I was thrilled to be able to get full frame images of these birds with just a 70-200mm lens. They are very charismatic and exciting to see in the field and provided me with an experience I will not forget. If you ever have the opportunity to seem them in the wild, I highly recommend it.
